Startup Weekend for Impact Entrepreneurs
April 5-7, 2019
Great Barrington, Massachusetts
Techstars Startup Weekend and Impact Entrepreneur, in partnership with Google and 1Berkshire, announce the first Startup Weekend for Impact Entrepreneurs, to be held in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Welcoming innovators of all ages (teen to retired) from around the Berkshires and the Northeastern United States and providing mentoring support from world-class social impact business leaders and investors, Startup Weekend for Impact Entrepreneurs turns a socially impactful idea into a business in 54 hours.
Socially impactful business ideas are ones meant to provide measurable benefit to human and/or natural communities. Ideas across all social and environmental disciplines and technologies are encouraged, including environmental, sustainability, housing, food and agriculture, wellness, mindfulness, women's empowerment, education, technology, data, AI, healthcare, pollution, waste, climate and hunger.
The Techstars Startup Weekend program has been run nearly 3000 times in 150 countries to date, and numerous established companies have their roots in Techstars Startup Weekend, such as Zapier, Rover.com and Giftstarter. Techstars Startup Weekend is designed for innovators who have an idea they would like to pursue or a problem they would like to solve but don’t know where to start to turn it into a business. Impact Entrepreneur, based in Sheffield, Massachusetts, hosts one of the largest global networks (20,000 members) of entrepreneurs, investors, scholars and students of social and environmental innovation, and its Center runs in-person and online programs that support the creation and growth of mission-driven businesses within the context of sustainable, “impact economy” development.
The Startup Weekend for Impact Entrepreneurs program is being held in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, celebrated by Smithsonian as the #1 Small Town in America, distinguished for its “high concentration of museums, historic sites, botanic gardens, resident orchestras, art galleries and other cultural assets common to big cities.”
The Startup Weekend for Impact Entrepreneurs is supported by Google’s Google for Startups initiative, which brings the best of Google’s products, connections and best practices to enable startups to build something better. Another program partner is 1Berkshire, a county-wide organization focused on economic development and promotion of the Berkshire region as a preferred place to visit, live and grow a business.
Mentors, speakers and judges for Startup Weekend for Impact Entrepreneurs have been drawn from Impact Entrepreneur’s network, and include distinguished business leaders who have founded/co-founded successful companies, led social impact programs at institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Brandeis, and Bard, consulted with leading social impact businesses, and who have founded and run celebrated investment funds in the rapidly growing impact investing sector.
